Das Unternehmen wurde am 12. März 1993 von John Andrew Barrett gegründet und füllte gerade in den ersten 20 Jahren erstklassige Fässer aus viele Destillerien der Karibik ab. Die Wurzeln dieses Unternehmens liegen aber nicht beim Rum, sondern beim Cognac. In diesem Feld war John Barrett viele Jahre lang tätig. Die Geschichte rund um John Barrett geht also viel weiter zurück als bis 1993. Mit seiner Erfahrung beriet Mr. Barrett unter anderem zu Beginn auch andere Whisky-Abfüller und mir ist gesagt worden, dass John Barrett der Rum-Kenner in UK schlechthin wäre. Allerdings haben die Abfüllungen in jüngster Zeit etwas nachgelassen. Die Zeit der grenzenlosen Auswahl scheint vorbei zu sein. Auch andere Unabhängige Abfüller haben diesen Markt mittlerweile für sich entdeckt. Mit dem Ansteigen der Whiskypreise könnten es noch mehr Whisky-Abfüller werden, welche Rum als zweites Standbein für sich entdecken können. Die Zeit wird zeigen, wer nach John Barrett die Bristol Spirits Limited als Managing Director übernimmt.
