Erneut möchte ich Ihnen einen Rum aus Jamaika präsentieren. Es handelt sich hier um einen ausverkauften Rum der in meinen Augen zu wenig Beachtung in der Vergangenheit bekam. Es ist der AD Rattray Jamaican Rum Monymusk Distillery 1986 25YO!

Zur Abfüllung:

Zur Geschichte der Monymusk Distillery habe ich einige Eckdaten im Review zum Rum Nation Supreme Jamaica (Monymusk) Lord 8 1991 25YO geschrieben. Das müssen wir uns nicht noch einmal geben. Wer Interesse hat sieht sich bitte das ältere Review an. Diese Abfüllung und der Berry Bros & Rudd Finest Jamaica Rum Hampden Distillery 1990 17 YO waren meine beiden ersten „richtigen“ Jamaikaner. Die zuvor verkosteten Rums betrachte ich heute nicht mehr als typische und echte Vertreter dieser Nation. Sie repräsentieren eher ein verzerrtes und unterschätztes Bild dessen, was diese Insel an guten Rums tatsächlich zu bieten hat. Diese Abfüllung aus 1986 ist wie ein Echo aus der Vergangenheit. Ich erwarte keine sehr alten Rums aus Jamaika oder von der Monymusk Distillery mehr. Überraschen lasse ich mich aber dennoch sehr gerne. Die neueren Jahrgänge aus dieser Destillerie, die in Europa aufgetaucht sind, waren 2002 und 2003, wobei ich von 2002 nur eine einzige Abfüllung, und von 2003 bisher zwei Abfüllungen im Glas hatte. Ansatzweise überzeugen konnte mich nur ein einziger Rum dieser drei Abfüllungen und mit dieser Meinung stehe ich auch so ziemlich alleine da. Besagter Rum von Moon Import aus 2002 wurde von 6 Leuten verkostet und alle außer mir befanden ihn als „mies“. Dies war letzten Jahres in Mailand. Es tauchte sogar ein kontinuierlich gebrannter Rum aus der Monymusk Distillery von 1997 auf. Die Fassreife war gefühlt bei Null und der Geschmack dementsprechend fast nicht existent. Die 15 Jahre, welche der Rum im Fass lag, waren weder in der Nase noch am Gaumen erkennbar. So gesehen kann ich die Argumentation einiger NAS-Verfechter schon verstehen, dass das Alter alleine absolut keine Aussagekraft besitzt. Das Fass muss schon etwas taugen. Mein Verständnis von Altersangaben hat sich im Laufe des letzten Jahres ohnehin etwas geändert. Für mich ist die Reife mittlerweile mehr ausschlaggebend als eine wunderschön anzusehende Zahl auf dem Label. Allerdings sollte man so fair sein, und die Altersangabe nicht wegfallen lassen. Warum? Selbst wenn die Reife passt, bin ich persönlich als Konsument nicht bereit für 8-10 Jahre an die 200€ hinzulegen. Egal wie gut die Reife ist. Vielleicht ist das ja ein Grund, warum manche Hersteller das Alter dann einfach wegfallen lassen. Wer weiß. Das Label verrät uns, dass damals mindestens 10 Fässer gekauft und nach Europa gebracht wurden. Diese Nummern stammen für mich vom Importeur. Dieses Fass brachte 295 Flaschen hervor. Die originale Fassstärke dürfte vielleicht bei 55 – 58% gewesen sein. Wir werden es leider nie erfahren. Aber genug davon. Auf geht’s zur Verkostung!

Verkostung AD Rattray Jamaican Rum Monymusk Distillery 1986 25YO:

Preis: Diese Abfüllung war 2011-2013 für 80-90€ käuflich zu erwerben.

Alter: Das offizielle Alter beläuft sich auf 25 Jahre. Der Rum wurde im Juni 1986 destilliert und ist dann abschließend im September 2011 abgefüllt worden.

Alkoholstärke: Die Trinkstärke beträgt 46%vol.

Destillationsverfahren: Offiziell gibt es hierzu keine Information auf dem Label.

Farbe: Sattes Gold

Viskosität: Der Rum fließt langsam an der Glaswand zurück. Viele kleine Perlen bilden sich dabei.

Nase: Ein Hauch von braunem Rohrzucker schwebt im Glas. Denkt hier am Besten an braunen Muscovado-Zucker, welcher (zum Glück) nicht komplett raffiniert wurde und noch Teile des gekochten und geklärten Zuckerrohrsaftes enthält. Begleitet wird dieser Geruch von sehr schwachen Esteraromen. An Früchten beherrschen Papayas, Bananen, Mangos und Aprikosen das Geruchsprofil. Anis und grasige Aromen sind auch präsent. Rieche ich da einen vagen Hauch von Kirschen? Weiter weg vom Glas rieche ich Vanille, Toffee, Eiche, Leder, Karamell und schwach Äpfel. Der Rum durfte übrigens über eine Stunde lang im Glas atmen und die Flasche ist bereits seit 2012 geöffnet. Schwenkt man das Glas, dann beherrschen kurzzeitig Rauch, Alkohol und Gewürze die Nase. Danach erscheinen die bereits zuvor erwähnten Früchte und beginnen dann allmählich das Geruchsprofil zu dominieren. Nur sehr undeutilich reiche ich auch noch Aromen von Ananas. Die Frucht an sich ist wunderschön und wird von der Fassreife begleitet, drängt diese jedoch etwas in den Hintergrund zurück. Die Nase ist nur leicht süßlich. Ein schöner Rum aus der Monymusk Distillery.

Gaumen: Ester, Früchte und eine leichte Süße fluten den gesamten Mundraum. Dann schmeckt man eine leichte Säuerlichkeit. Nicht extrem aber dennoch merklich vorhanden. An Früchten erkenne ich Papayas, Äpfel, Mangos und Kirschen. Für „nur“ 46%vol schmeckt der Rum sehr gut und kann viele Aromen vorweisen. Langsam kommen Kräuter zum Vorschein. Anis, Eiche und Toffee vom Fass machen sich bemerkbar. Der Rum bleibt leicht säuerlich am Gaumen, wird aber immer noch von dieser wunderschönen und nun langsam verblassenden Frucht begleitet. Nach längerer Zeit schmecke ich Holzkohle, Spuren von Rauch und immer noch Kirschen. Die leichte Süße und die Esteraromen vom Beginn sind schon verschwunden. Wie ein (für mich) typischer Jamaikanerschmeckt man langsam ein pflanzliches Profil heraus. Diese Wandlung kenne ich zumindest von Hampden und Long Pond. Bei Worthy Park habe ich noch nicht so sehr darauf geachtet. Der Rum macht auf mich am Ende den Eindruck ein sehr dünner und extrem gestreckter Hampden zu sein. Nach dem 2. Schluck schmecke ich noch mehr Früchte und Ester am Gaumen. Wieder leicht säuerlich und süß zu Beginn. Papayas, Ananas und schwach reife Bananen. Dann wandelt sich das Bild wieder mehr zu einem pflanzlichen Geschmack, verwoben mit Anis und Nuancen von Medizin. Die Frucht verblasst und die Fassreife tritt wieder hervor. Leder, Toffee, Eiche und Kräuter am Ende.

Abgang: Eiche, Früchte und Holzkohle zu Beginn des Abgangs. Dann Toffee, Anis, Kräuter und noch mehr Früchte. Grasige Aromen und ein pflanzlicher Geschmack am Ende. Nach dem 2. Schluck Papayas und schwach Esteraromen. Dann wieder Eiche, Holzkohle und Toffee. Leder, Kräuter und Anis am Ende. Der Rum hinterlässt ein trockenes Mundgefühl.

Fazit: Eine Abfüllung mit viel Potenzial, die aber viel zu früh auf den Markt kam. Damit bemängele ich jetzt nicht etwa die Fassreife, sondern eher die Trinkstärke. Im Jahre 2012 war Fassstärke noch nicht so sehr gefragt. Diese Addition von Wasser hat der Abfüllung einen Hemmschuh verpasst. Die Qualität ist immer noch sehr ordentlich, kann sich aber leider nicht mit der eines Rum Nation Jamaica Supreme Lord 8 1991 25 YO messen. Dazwischen liegen einfach zu viele % und ein Sherry-Finish. Vielleicht wäre diese Abfüllung von A.D.Rattray auf einem ähnlichen Niveau bei voller Fassstärke gewesen. So kann ich leider nur die unten abgebildete Punktezahl vergeben. Ein Rum mit wunderschöner Reife. Ich erwarte so schnell keinen weiteren Rum mehr aus dieser Destillerie mit einer derartigen Qualität. Es dürften eher junge Rums das Bild dominieren. Ob diese allerdings auch eine ordentliche Qualität liefern können bleibt, wie oben bereits geschrieben, vorerst abzuwarten. Ein Rum aus 2002 hatte Potenzial zu mehr, verfügte aber auch über zu viele Defizite um mit diesen alten Qualitäten gleichzuziehen. Der Jahrgang 2003 konnte mich bisher in keinster Weise überzeugen. Der Column-Rum aus Monymusk von Duncan Taylor war eine Katastrophe. Dieser Rum von 1986 hingegen musste in einer Pot-Still gebrannt worden sein. Zwar ist Monymusk jetzt nicht bekannt dafür, besonders schwere Pot-Still Destillate nach Europa zu verkaufen, aber mit dieser Abfüllung und der von Rum Nation aus 1991, haben die alten Brennmeister zumindest bewiesen, dass sie an Können verfügen. Bei der Verkostung des Rum Nation musste ich insgeheim immer zwangsläufig an diesen Rum von A.D. Rattray denken. Der Unterschied von 1986/1991 zu 2003 ist gewaltig. Bisher hoffe ich, dass diese Traurige Tatsache nur auf die katastrophale Fassreife zurückzuführen ist. Der Rum aus 2002 hatte Potenzial. Der Einfluss des Fasses war nach 12 Jahren gut, hätte aber noch mehr an Oxidation benötigt und vor allem eines: keine Wasserzufuhr. Alle bisherigen Pot Still Rums aus Monymusk vertragen kein Wasser. Die bisherige Ausnahme ist dieser Rum aus 1986 und selbst hier erwische ich mich immer wieder bei der Frage: „Wie krass hätte der wohl in Fassstärke geschmeckt?“ Leider entschied man sich damals dazu, den Rum zu verdünnen. Betrachten sie diese Aussage als Jammern auf hohem Niveau. Der Rum war und ist gut. Punkt. Er hätte aber wesentlich besser sein können. Ich wünsche Euch noch einen schönen Sonntag!

Welcome back to BAM!

Again, I would like to present a rum from Jamaica. This is sold-out rum got in my opinion too little attention in the past. It is the AD Rattray Jamaican Rum Distillery Monymusk 1986 25YO!

The Bottling:

I wrote a little bit of the history of the Monymusk Estate and its distillery in the review of the Rum Nation Supreme Lord 8 Jamaica (Monymusk) 1991 25YO. We do not have to repeat that again. Anyone interested in this topic please take a look at the mentioned Review of the Supreme Lord 8. This bottling and the Berry Bros & Rudd Finest Jamaica Rum Distillery Hampden 1990 17 YO were my two first "real" Jamaican rums. I do no longer considere the previously tasted rums as typical and genuine representatives of this tropical nation. They rather represent a somewhat distorted and underestimated picture of what the island actually has offered when it comes to Full Proof or full flavoured rums not bottled at pussy-strength, say 40 – 45%abv. Well technically this one is only 46%abv but it is full flavoured and does not belong to the aforesaid category. This bottling from 1986 is like an echo from the past. I do not expect very old rum from Jamaica or by the Monymusk Distillery return so soon. The recent vintages from this distillery, which have emerged in Europe, were from 2002 and 2003, which I previously had two bottlings of 2002, and from 2003 only one single bottling in my glass. Both rums from 2003 were…. not good. Lets just put it that way. The rum from 2003 had potential for more, but was also not really superior like some of the old rums. But even with this opinion I am all alone. Said rum from Moon Import distilled in 2002 was tasted by 6 people at one evening and all except myself were in the strong opinion, that this rum was simply horribly crap. This was last year in Milan. There was even a rum from Monymusk distilled in a continuous still in 1997 and bottled by Duncan Taylor. The barrel aging was felt at zero and the taste accordingly was almost nonexistent. The 15 years, which this rum has spent in the cask, were not really present. As such, I can understand the reasoning of some NAS advocates that age-statements alone have no expressiveness. The barrel must have certain some qualities. That's basic knowledge, I am not telling you anything new here. My understanding of age has already changed somewhat over the past years. For me, maturity is more crucial than a beautiful age-statement sitting on the front-label. However, I am still the opinion that the age-statement should simply be stated on the label and not be eliminated. Why? Even if the maturity is on top, I am personally, as a consumer, not ready to pay 200€ or more for rums with an age of 8-10 years. No matter how good the maturity actually is. Maybe that is one reason why some manufacturers have removed this statement. Simply to avoid a shit-storm that would occur in such a constellation. Who knows. The label tells us that in 1986 at least 10 barrels were bought and brought to Europe. These barrel-numbers are made by the importer. This barrel has produced 295 bottles. The original cask strength may have been perhaps at 55-58%abv. We will unfortunately never know. But enough of that. Let's proceed with the actual tasting!

Tasting AD Rattray Jamaican Rum Monymusk Distillery 1986 25YO:

Price: This bottling was available for 80-90 € in the period of 2011-2013.

Age: The official age is 25 years. The rum was distilled in June 1986 and has then been bottled in September 2011.

ABV: The drinking strength is 46% vol.

Process of distillation: Officially there is no information about it on the label.

Colour: Deep golden colour.

Viscosity: The rum slowly flows back along the glass wall. Many small beads are forming and do remain on the glass.

Nose: A touch of brown cane-sugar is floating in the glass. Think here best of brown muscovado sugar which has (thankfully) not been fully refined and still contains parts of the boiled and clarified sugarcane juice. This impression is accompanied by very weak ester flavours. On fruits dominate papayas, bananas, mangoes and apricots. Anis and grassy flavours are also present. Do I smell a vague hint of cherries? Further away from the glass I smell vanilla, toffee, oak, leather, caramel and nuances of apples. The rum was allowed to breathe for over an hour in the glass and the bottle is open since 2012. And yes I have not consumed much of this baby in all this time. After a slew of the glass, when the rum freshly covers all the glass up to the top edge, I briefly smell smoke, alcohol and spices. Thereafter, the already aforementioned fruits do appear and then gradually begin to dominate the odor profile. There are very vague aromas of pineapple. The fruit itself is beautiful and is being accompanied by the barrel flavours, but the latter are being pushed into the background. The nose is only slightly sweet. A very good rum from the Monymusk Distillery.

Palate: Esters, fruits and a slight sweetness floods the entire mouth. Then you can taste a slight sourness. It's not extreme but still noticeably present. Regarding fruits I taste papayas, apples, mangoes and cherries. The palate of thisis very good and can boast many flavours, despite the low abv of 46%. Slowly herbs emerge. Anise, oak and toffee from the cask make themselves more present. The rum is slightly herbal on the palate, but is still accompanied by this beautiful but and now slowly fading fruit. After some time I taste charcoal, traces of smoke and still some cherries. The slight sweetness and ester flavours from the beginning have disappeared. As a typical Jamaican rum (at least for me) this one is becoming very herbal in the end. This change is somewhat similiar with the rums from Long Pond and Hampden. I can't recall this in the rums of Worthy Park. This rum makes me thinking of a very thin and extremely stretched Hampden at the end. After the 2nd sip I taste more fruits and esters on the palate. Again slightly sour and sweet at the beginning. Papaya, pineapple and some ripe bananas. Then, the picture changes again, becoming a more herbal, interwoven with anise and hints of Medicine. The fruit fades out and the barrel maturity emerges again. Leather, toffee, oak and herbs at the end.

Finish: Oak, fruit and charcoal at the beginning. Then Toffee, anise, herbs and even more fruit. Grassy aromas and a herbal taste at the end. After the 2nd sip papayas and weak ester flavours. Then again oak, charcoal and toffee. Leather, herbs and aniseed at the end. The rum leaves a dry mouthfeeling.

Conclusion: A bottling with a lot of potential, but it was bottled too early. Too early? Was the cask to active? No. I meant something else. This rum was bottled at a time, when rums in a higher strength were only to be found in minor quantities on the market. Gladly this picture has changed over the last years. In 2012 cask strength was not much in demand. This addition of water has lowered the potential score significantly. Don't get me wrong the quality is still very good, but it cannot match with the Rum Nation Jamaica Supreme Lord 8 1991 25 YO. There are simply to many %abv missing, and of course a sherry-finish. Perhaps this bottling of A.D. Rattray would have been at a similar level at full cask. So unfortunately I can only awarded the number of points shown below. It still a rum with a beautiful maturity and outstanding quality, which deserves a scoring at 90. I expect so fast no more rums more from this distillery with such a quality. Younger rums will dominate the market in the future slowly but surely. I will make no assumption about the quality of these younger ones. Maybe we will get some true authentic rums with tropical aging, but there is no guarantee for this. The rum of 2002 bottled by Moon Import was continental matured and in my opinion it had potential, but the shortcomings were too much. The Column rum from Monymusk bottled by Duncan Taylor was a disaster. This rum from 1986 however, must have been made with a pot still. Although Monymusk is not known for particularly heavy pot still distillates in Europe, but in the actual bottling and in the Rum Nation Supreme Lord 8, the old master distillers did demonstrate that they have the ability to make good quality rums. During the first tasting session of the Supreme Lord 8 I often thought about this bottling from A.D. Rattray. The difference from 1986/1991 to 2003 is huge. So far I hope that this sad fact is only due to the catastrophic barrel maturation. The rum from 2002 had potential. The influence of the barrel was well after 12 years. However, some more oxidation would have made it better. And above all: the addition of water should have been avoided. All previous pot still rums from Monymusk do not tolerate much water. The only exception is this rum in 1986 and even here I catch myself musing at the thought: "How amazing it would have been at cask strength." Unfortunately, it was decided at that time to dilute the rum. Please bear in mind that I am constantly whining on a high level and this one is no exception. The rum was and is good. Period. But it could have been much better. That's it then. I wish you a nice Sunday!
