Fijian
Rum
Map of Fiji from 1854 (1860) Source: www.antiquemapsandglobes.com |
Rum did not matter on Fiji for a long
time. Until the cotton crisis and the associated fall in prices in
the 1860s, sugar-cane was not grown on a large scale in this colony.
Only from this on the cultivation of sugar-cane was began on a large
scale. However, this growth continued only until the sugar crisis in
1884-85. Many small mills had to close down and so only four remained
on the island. The Colonial Sugar Refining Company started to take
over the management of the sugar cane cultivation on Fiji in 1880.
The company withdrew in 1973 from his business on Fiji.
The government took over the business until 1975. In 1976 the then state-owned Fiji Sugar Marketing Company Limited was founded. The FSC
has a monopoly of the sugar production on the island. She owns four
sugar factories on the island and the majority of the shares belongs
to the state. In 1979, a subcontractor was founded: South Pacific
Distillers Limited. It is also the only active and remaining rum
distillery on Fiji.
Rums from there taste like a
combination of rums from Barbados and Jamaica. Some connoisseurs
associated the taste with "rubber" or plastic. It is most
likely to be described as a combination of a lightweight Hampden
(Jamaica) and a certain pot still profile once produced in the West Indies Rum Distillery (Barbados).
