Martinican Trio. Rhum Agricole Neisson Profile Series

(the English part is below, just skip the German part)

Servus Leute,

Man verfolgte also drei unterschiedliche Reifungsstategien.

Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 62 49,2%vol.

Verkostung:

Alter: Mindestens 12 Monate.

Alkoholstärke: 49,2%vol.

Destillationsverfahren: Jean Neissons „Savalle“-Still.

Farbe: Sattes Gold.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 105 54,2%vol.

Verkostung:

Alter: Mindestens 12 Monate.

Alkoholstärke: 54,2%vol.

Destillationsverfahren: Jean Neissons „Savalle“-Still.

Farbe: Blasses Gold.

Abgang: Zu beginn schmeckt man Rauch satt.

Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 107 52,8%vol.

Verkostung:

Alter: Mindestens 12 Monate.

Alkoholstärke: 52,8%vol.

Destillationsverfahren: Jean Neissons „Savalle“-Still.

Farbe: Blasses Gold.

Howdy folks,

I did not really want to publish this review given the extraordinary and shitty circumstances that are currently prevailing in our beautiful Europe. However, after a careful consideration I have decided to publish it regardless. On today’s menu is again a multiple review. This time we go back and dive again into the world of Rhum Agricole. More precisely, we are going to Martinique. Once again we want to take a close look at some rhums from the Neisson distillery. This time we will examine the rhums from the Profil series.

The Bottling:

So far there have been three bottlings of this small series. The Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 62 49.2%vol was selected by La Maison du Whiskey for its 65th anniversary. Apparently there were only 900 bottles of this. Virgin Oak barrels were used. This bottling felt extremely difficult to get your hands on. I was only able to bid on a small sample. The second bottling is the Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 105 54.2% vol. American white oak and French oak staved casks appear to have been used here. According to Velier, these were first filled with white rhum and emptied again after 4 months. The aim was to extract the tannins, which are released into the contents in large quantities in fresh barrels. The goal was to limit the addition of these bitter substances from the wood to the rhum. When Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois profile 107 52.8% vol. did you let the rum mature differently First, ex-bourbon casks were used and the Profil 107 was left to linger in them for 15 months. After that, it was aged in French oak barrels for a few months. Three different maturation strategies were therefore pursued. Actually, one should speak of five bottlings of the profile series. There are two other versions, namely an organic version of the profile 105 and the profile 107. However, I do not know these two versions and will not go into them any further at this point. All bottlings in the Profil series have the designation Rhum élevé sous bois (ESB) on the label, which simply means "rhum aged in wood". This designation is a protected designation according to the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) of rhum from Martinique. ESB rhums must have matured in wooden barrels for at least 12 months. They are only considered aged rhums (rhum vieux) if they are aged to at least three years. They must also have 250g of non-alcoholic (volatile) components per 100 liters of pure alcohol. All rhums in the Profil series meet these requirements. That the distillery has dared to experiment despite the increased demand for their rhums is amazing. After all, each year's production volume is quite limited due to the limited amount of sugar cane. Only 400,000 liters of rhum are produced each year. The Angels share must also be taken into account when thinking of the aged rhums of this distillery. Can these young specimens compete with the aged rhums? We will be able to determine that with certainty with this tasting. I have already given some details about the history of the distillery in the review of the Rhum Agricole Neisson X.O. Rhum Vieux. That's why we're going straight to the tasting at this point.

Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 62 49,2%abv

Tasting:

Price: The rum is all but gone. The price ranged from 60 to 70€. LMDW sold it for €59.50.

Age: At least 12 months.

ABV: 49.2%abv.

Process of distillation: Jean Neisson's "Savalle" still.

Colour: Rich gold.

Viscosity: A small crown forms on the glass. The rhum flows back down the entire surface of the glass to the bottomand forms a greasy film. Only then do small pearls appear.

Nose: After removing the glass lid I smell a very subtle nuance of vanilla. This is accompanied by a weak sweetness and subtle sugar cane. Deep in the glass I smell faint citrus, sugar cane, caramel and vanilla. The rhum does not tolerate a very long standing time. After more than an hour it seems to lose momentum again. If you wet the glass freshly with rhum, the alcohol tickles slightly at first. It takes a while for the aromas to develop fully. I smell spices, light oak aromas, subtle sugar cane and exotic fruits, interwoven with a medicinal component. Unfortunately, it is not a particularly complex nose. The alcohol disappears after a short time. Unfortunately, the aromas fade just as quickly with longer standing times. It's either my sample or this bottling isn't particularly explosive on the nose.

Palate: First, sugar cane, citrus fruits, caramel and a slight sweetness flood the palate. Then spice, smoke and oak aromas follow. The sweetness fades quickly. The rhum becomes more herbal in taste. The sugar cane is not as dominant as I expected for a rhum of this young age. Flowery aromas, exotic fruits and slightly sweet caramel complete the first sip. On the second sip smoke with medicinal components. Then sugar cane and weak citrus. limes? Caramel, leather, oak and light spice aromas follow. cloves and anise. The barrel influence is already clearly present and well integrated. At the end oak, anise and subtle grassy aromas. With the last sip, clearly more present sugar cane aromas and citrus fruits. Only then do sweet caramel, spices and oak emerge. The rum tastes slightly sweet. A certain acidity lurks in the background of the profile, but cannot really make itself felt. The sugar cane and citrus fruits linger in the mouth for a long time. Then spices and slightly floral aromas come to the fore.

Finish: After the first sip, spices including anise and cloves. Nuances of cinnamon and cane sugar follow in a flash. This is followed by oak aromas and weak sugar cane. At the end, sweet camarel, cane and smoke linger on the palate. After the second sip, cane sugar, cane and sweet caramel, closely followed by light smoke and oak flavors. Nuances of adhesive can only be guessed at very faintly. After the last sip, caramel, sugar cane, citrus, hints of pineapple and smoke. The citrus fruits linger in the mouth for a long time this time. The palate is beautifully dried out.

Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 105 54,2%abv

Tasting:

Price: The price ranged between €48 and €55. Some shops also asked for more. Here, too, the rhum has disappeared from almost many shops, but it can still be purchased.

Age: At least 12 months.

ABV: 54.2% abv.

Process of distillation: Jean Neisson's "Savalle" still.

Colour: Pale gold.

Viscosity: The rhum flows quickly down the glass wall in the form of long streaks.

Nose: If you remove the lid, you first smell strong sugar cane, mixed with an equally dominant vanilla note, followed by banana ice cream, mangoes and cedar wood. Citrus fruits such as limes are also served a little further away from the glass. Accordingly, it has a slightly acidic effect. A mixture of sugar cane, oranges, bananas, mangoes, citrus fruits, oak aromas and medicinal notes dominates deep in the glass. In contrast to the Neisson X.O., where I found it very difficult to recognize the citrus aromas and classified them as slightly acidic, these are much more pronounced here. They enrich the flavor profile immensely. After more than an hour in the glass, the alcohol tickles your nose only slightly. I don't really notice the 54.2% abv. Swirl the glass and sprinkle it with fresh rhum, and you're first served citrus fruits, bananas and a hint of coconut. Only then do grassy sugar cane aromas become noticeable. The open-lid image shifts to a herbal and medicinal profile. Sugar cane, herbs and smoke are increasingly replacing fruit. Then a hint of vanilla appears. The oak of the barrel is present, but suppressed by the other impressions. Far away from glass one reaches a light sweetness, mixed with tobacco and fruits. In the glass, on the other hand, the profile is slightly acidic. The sweetness is gone. The alcohol now burns more in the nose, but is still very subtle compared to other rhums/rums.

Palate: At the beginning, a slight sweetness floods the mouth. Then comes a blend of sweet sugarcane, cedarwood, bananas and mangoes mixed with slightly tart and medicinal components. The rum burns only very gently on the palate. I never notice the 54.2%abv. The rhum quickly becomes vegetal as it is diluted in the mouth. Briefly I taste vanilla, oranges and bananas before these are pushed aside by herbs, sugar cane, leather and smoke. On the second sip, that sweetness again, this time mixed with flavors of glue. Then citrus fruits, banana ice cream, smoke and medicinal flavor components follow. This time the rum burns stronger, but is still gentle compared to other bottlings. Cedar wood, sugar cane, bananas and citrus fruits complete the finish. On the third sip vanilla, glue aromas, sugar cane and spices on tap. The profile is only slightly sweet, with the sweetness quickly dissipating and giving way to a slight acidity. Smoke, spices, banana and sugar cane dominate the mouth. A fourth sip doesn't change the picture much anymore. Smoke, vanilla and sugar cane, with only nuances of glue dominate the mouth. Again the sweetness fades quickly. All in all, you don't notice this high drinking strength. At least not me.

Finish: At the beginning you can taste the smoke. Then herbs and sugar cane. Minimal nuances of banana ice cream flit across the palate. Smoke, nuances of spices and herbs complete the finish. After the second sip first citrus fruits, bananas, spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, then smoke and some herbs. The sugar cane is only very subtle. Smoke and herbs linger on the palate for a long time. After the third sip, full of smoke mixed with delicate sugar cane, banana, vanilla and tart herbs. The fruit fades and the smoke intensifies. After the third sip at the latest, the finish really gets going. The mouth is beautifully dried out. There is no bitterness.

Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 107 52,8%abv

Tasting:

Price: At LMDW you can still get it for 56€. Otherwise, this bottling has also disappeared from the range in many shops, including in Germany.

Age: At least 12 months.

ABV: 52.8%abv.

Process of distillation: Jean Neisson's "Savalle" still.

Colour: Pale gold.

Viscosity: The rhum flows down the glass wall relatively quickly.

Nose: Here grassy sugar cane, a hint of cane sugar and cedar wood escape the glass. Exotic fruits in the form of pineapples and papayas can also be seen. The cedar wood aromas are felt to be weaker here than in the 105 profile. Closer to the edge of the glass, sugar cane aromas again, medicinal components in the form of smoke, and exotic fruits again. Oak and caramel can also be noticed, but these are pushed into the background by the alcohol and the smoke. Citrus fruits are also back. limes? The alcohol is no longer intrusive after more than an hour, but is still present. If you wet the glass freshly with the rhum, the alcohol tickles your nose at first. This gives way to dominant smoke, sugar cane, and faint aromas of caramel and oak. Then cedar wood and exotic fruits appear. Again citrus fruits and faint aromas of pineapple. The citrus fruits with the sugar cane now form the main part of all smells. The cedar wood fades a bit against it. Here, too, a slight sweetness mixed with a certain acidity can be seen further away from the glass. In the glass, on the other hand, the medicinal profile predominates and the nose is no longer sweet. Compared to the profile 105, the nose of the profile 107 feels a little more reserved.

Palate: With the first sip, delicious sugar cane floods your mouth. Then the alcohol burns slightly on the tongue. Medicinal smoke, citrus fruits, a hint of pineapple and oak then assault the senses. Over time, the alcohol disappears and a slight sweetness spreads, but it quickly becomes sour. Cedar wood, smoke, caramel and a touch of leather now caress the palate. With the second sip, significantly stronger sugar cane. The alcohol is much milder than you would expect for 52.8% vol. Then again exotic fruits and smoke. Limes, lemons and a hint of pineapple. Cedar wood only briefly scurries over the tongue. The barrel aromas are present, but the still young rhum dominates the entire profile here as well. The flow of saliva is well stimulated by the rhum. With the last sip, sugar cane dominates again, with smoke aromas that are just as dominant. First you taste a slight sweetness, which changes back to a certain acidity without becoming obtrusive. The rum burns pleasantly on the palate and on the tongue. Citrus fruits, pineapple and hints of cedar wood follow. At the end you can taste spices, a hint of caramel and still medicinal smoke. A very young fellow indeed

Finish: Spices, sugar cane, smoke and oak aromas after the first sip. The sugar cane fades and a vegetal flavor lingers on the palate. In the end, only smoke and a hint of citrus fruits linger in the mouth. After the second sip, smoke and sugar cane again. Then citrus mixed with nuances of honey, leather and caramel. At the end you can taste spices and a hint of oak. After the last sip, floral aromas, grassy sugar cane and medicinal smoke. The sugar cane dominates the finish. Again, there is an interplay towards a more medicinal profile, with spices only appearing at the end.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conclusion: The Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 62 49.2% abv was a bit of a disappointment for me at first. On the palate it was then able to demonstrate its potential. The virgin white oak has already done a good job after a short time. Could the rhum last for many years in it? The result is quite impressive. However, it cannot compete with a Rhum Vieux. After the somewhat restrained nose, I wanted to write off this profile, but the palate was able to make up for some things. I can now somewhat understand why it was so difficult for me to obtain this one. However, It is not the best bottling of the Pofile Series.

The Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 105 54.2%abv is extremely tasty. This is impressive given its young age. However, you can still taste some remnants of its unaged stage. The medicinal component is a clear indication of this. At no time did I find the 54.2%abv disturbing. This bottling can't keep up with a Rhum Vieux either. Nevertheless, it shows impressively what has become of the rhum with the use of different types of wood in a relatively short amount of time. My comparison to this is the Neisson Rhum Blanc Esprit 70% abv. With this rhum, Leo downed me with just one cocktail at the meeting in Karlsruhe (2021). It is a very powerful but very rough spirit. I can't drink white or unaged rhums. I do not like them. Not even Neissons. This short maturation has not only made this rhum drinkable, but also made it a pleasurable experience for me.

It was not easy for me to rate these young Neissons, but there can't always be winners and high ratings. I still don't regret buying my bottles. These rhum agricoles are delicious for in between meals or as a digestif. You can't spend hours sniffing them or letting your mind wander. These rhums should be enjoyed in the mouth and not in the nose. For me, only the Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 105 54.2%abv can shine on the nose and on the palate. If the Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 62 49.2% abv had had a better nose, then it would have been the winner of this comparison. That's the profile 105 for me. The Rhum Agricole Neisson Rhum élevé sous bois Profil 107 52.8% abv is a weaker version of the profile 105. The nose was better than, for example, the profile 62, but on the palate it lost against the 62 and 105. However, this rating is purely subjective. Other connoisseurs may come to a different conclusion. That's it for today. Take care of yourselves.

Rhum Agricole Neisson X.O. Rhum Vieux

(the English part is below, just skip the German part)

Servus Leute!

Destillationsverfahren: Jean Neissons „Savalle“-Still.

Farbe: Sattes Gold.

Hello folks!

Today there is again a Martinican bottling on the blog. Unfortunately, a cold forces me to use tasting notes from less than a week ago. In the meantime I got a sample of a very interesting Demerara rum that I would have liked to introduce to you today, but my body is against it. Today's bottling is the Rhum Agricole Neisson X.O. Rhum Vieux!

The Bottling:

Adrien and Jean Hildebert Pamphile Neisson, the two sons of a Creole butcher, bought land in La Thieubert in 1932 (Florette Camard-Hayot, 1997). The younger of the two brothers, Jean Hildebert, used his chance to study in France, while his older brother Adrien Neisson stayed behind. The original 20 hectares were insufficient and he had to lease land in Saint-Pierre. He started a small distillery. His allocated quota, which was imposed by the French government on all colonies after the end of World War I, after colonial alcohol had literally flooded the metropolis in 1919, was sold locally without any problems. In the beginning, the distillery supplied only for the domestic consumption. Meanwhile, his brother Jean successfully completed his studies at the Institut de Chimie de Paris and married a pharmacist. He stayed in Paris and started an import-export company. It was he who designed the characteristic Neisson bottle shape with a screen-printed label and angular shoulders, also known as "Zépol Karé". In the 1950s Jean stayed on Martinique and devoted himself more intensively to the production of rhum. The knowledge he acquired as a chemist during his studies helped him considerably. In 1958 a new copper “Savalle” was finally installed. However, this Savalle is not the one found in the old patents. Jean modified the still. These modifications are supposed to vouch for the great quality of Neisson. If you think of the Savalle as an organ, then it was Adrien Neisson who coaxed the melody of “Neisson” from it. After the death of his brother Adrien in 1971, Jean took over the management of the business and commuted back and forth between Martinique and Paris. The sale of rhum in France became more and more important. With his death in 1986 a time of uncertainty began. The succession was not really clarified. His daughter Claudine Neisson-Vernant did not take over the management of the business. However, Jean Neisson had passed on his passion and knowledge to his then 15-year-old grandson, Grégory. The transition was secured by his sister Gabrielle, a close family friend named Ernest René-Corail, and former distiller Emmanuel Fedronic. This is how the distillery was finally kept going. Gabrielle herself died in 1995. Now Claudine Neisson-Vernant finally decided to fulfill the wish of her father Jean Neisson and took over the management of the business. Together with Grégory Vernant, she keeps the distillery running and together they even managed to produce an organic rhum with the AOC seal. On the 40 hectare area, only around three to four thousand tons of sugar cane are harvested, which only produces 400,000 liters of rhum. According to Claudines statement, this modest amount prevents larger deliveries and repeatedly ensures rapid sell-offs of their rhums.

This bottling differs from the namesake with 48.5%abv in terms of the age of the rhums used. Today's bottling is said to contain three to nine year old rhums. The version with 48.5%abv has nine to twelve year old rhums combined. This was clearly reflected in the demanded price, but it was still humane. I only tried today's bottling with 45%abv. I think thats it. We have had all the essentials. Lets move on to the tasting!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tasting :

Price: I paid about 50€ for my first bottle.

Age: Rhums between three and nine years old.

ABV: 45% abv.

Process of distillation: Jean Neisson's “Savalle” still.

Colour: Rich gold.

Viscosity: The rhum slowly flows down the glass and forms a greasy film.

Nose: When you remove the lid, vanilla, caramel, subtle sugar cane, a hint of coconut and cedarwood are escaping the glass. There are also exotic fruits such as mangoes and faint banana aromas. The alcohol is very weak. These impressions are perceptible a little further away from the edge of the glass. If you dip your nose deep into it, then you are confronted with weak sugar cane aromas, cedar wood, cedar wood and very weak ester aromas. This nose reminds me a little of an exotic banana ice cream into which sugar cane juice has been added. The barrel maturity is very well integrated and at no time too dominant. With a deep breath one thinks oranges, cinnamon, oak and can also see a little smoke. The rhum has a certain medical profile, but this is never dominant. It is rather a wonderful interplay between exotic fruits of many kinds, very weak ester aromas, vanilla, cedar wood and the medicinal smells. The nose is slightly sweet. The vanilla aroma, mixed with the oak from the barrel, gives this rhum a special touch. The sugar cane is by far not as dominant as it is known from other Martinican Rhums. A barrel strength Neisson on this level and at this maturity must be something special.

Palate: With tExotic fruits, smoke, herbs and sugar cane linger in the mouth at the end. With the second sip, the alcohol burns a little more. A slight acidity floods the mouth, accompanied by sugar cane, exotic fruits and oak aromas. Then spices like cinnamon and smoke come out. The sugar cane is very subtle at all times and is always only a companion to the other impressions and does not dominate the palate.he first sip you taste first sweet sugar cane, then vanilla, cedarwood and exotic fruits, including bananas and mangoes, with the bananas being a bit stronger. The alcohol burns very gently on the palate and is at no point bothersome. The rhum is becoming more herbal. The sugar cane will gain some weight before it fades, giving priority to medicinal flavor components. Exotic fruits, smoke, herbs and sugar cane linger in the mouth at the end. With the second sip, the alcohol burns a little more. A slight acidity floods the mouth, accompanied by sugar cane, exotic fruits and oak aromas. Then spices like cinnamon and smoke come out. The sugar cane is very subtle at all times and is always only a companion to the other impressions and does not dominate the palate. The rhum becomes herbal again and tastes like mangoes, a hint of oranges and cinnamon. Medicinal nuances, sugar cane, oak and only minimal fruits form the conclusion. With the third sip, first cedar wood, vanilla, mangoes, bananas and smoke. The medicinal flavor components become stronger. The sweetness has disappeared and the rhum tastes medicinal to slightly sour. Then fed up with smoke, mixed with hints of spices. The rhum burns the hardest now, but is still a delight for the palate.

Finish: After the first sip, smoke, spices, oak and tender sugar cane mixed with leather, caramel and mangoes. Then the spices get stronger and the finish becomes herbal. After the second sip, again spices, sugar cane and oak. The Agricole becomes vegetable again very quickly and this time it dries out the oral cavity. A medicinal taste with smoke now dominates the finish of the third sip. A hint of vanilla and banana aromas flits over the tongue for a very short time before they give way to the cedar wood. The Rhum has no bitterness worth mentioning and now dries out the mouth beautifully.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conclusion: The Rhum Agricole Neisson XO is a small pearl among the Martinican Rhum Agricoles. For this money you get a very good agriculturally produced rhum. You can't help but congratulate Grégory Vernant and Jean Neisson († 1986) for creating and maintaining this style. Claudine Neisson-Vernant also deserves great respect for what has been achieved. Not only is a very solid product delivered here, but a bottling is also created that towers above many other standard bottlings. Please do not be fooled by the rating. It may just be the upper end of the midfield, but these ratings are owed to the standards of the liquor industry, which I didn't want to practice early in my rum career because it doesn't always do justice to the bottlers and and the bottlings. If you only take note of the number of points without the conclusion or the entire review, you will miss out on a small treasure here. Granted, there are better bottlings of Neisson. But for this price you really can't complain. The interaction between the oak aromas and the exotic fruits, with a very subtle hint of sugar cane, give this bottling something special. If it is this dominant sugarcane note that you hate or prefer, then this bottling will surprise or disappoint you. Of the various “Profile” Neissons, I only have "Profile 105" so far. At the beginning I wanted to do a double review. But it didn't come to that and so the Profile one will get its own review.

Note on my own behalf: It's been a little while since I uploaded the last review. All the time that I currently have at my disposal goes to the current project. Actually, I wanted to finished it weeks ago and also have it translated into English. Since my workplace is going haywire at the moment and the chaos increases week by week, I often lose the necessary energy. I often don't have the time for an extensive tasting like this. I would like to apologize for this. I hope this does not become permanent. I wish all of you a nice Sunday!
