Rum und Schweden? Eine interessante Mischung.

Willkommen auf Barrel-Aged-Mind! Heute kommt eine aktuell verfügbare Abfüllung aus Barbados auf dem Blog. Natürlich will ich hier aber auch nicht verheimlichen, dass es bisher nur eine Quelle außerhalb von Schweden gibt und diese Rums sündhaft teuer sind. Aber nach all den Demeraras ist es mal wieder Zeit für etwas Abwechslung. ;)

Zur Abfüllung / Zum Abfüller:

Hier handelt es sich um den Unabhängigen Abfüller Svenska Eldvatten (schwedisches Feuerwasser) aus Schweden. Betrieben wird dieser Indy von Tommy Andersen und Peter Sjögren.Ich muss gestehen, dass ich den Namen dieses Unabhängigen Abfüllers auch nie zuvor gelesen habe, bis diese kleine Rum-Serie letztes Jahr das Licht der Welt erblickte. Der Name der Serie ist „The Rum Swedes“. Diese Serie umfasst bisher zwei Rums aus Guyana (Diamond Distillery, 2002 & 2003), diesen Rum aus Barbados, eine Abfüllung aus Jamaika (Hampden Distillery, 2000) und zwei Abfüllungen aus Trinidad (Caroni Distillery, 1997 & 1999). Alles also interessante Kandidaten die auf den ersten Blick keine Langeweile versprechen. Dem gegenüber steht allerdings die geringe Verfügbarkeit und die hohen Preise. Aber für unsere Rum-Freunde in Schweden müssen diese Abfüllungen wahrlich kleine Schätze darstellen. Mir sprang dieser Rum aus Barbados gleich zu beginn ins Auge, allerdings hatte ich keine Möglichkeit an eine Flasche heran zu kommen. Schließlich fanden einige Flaschen den Weg in deutsche Hände und auch nach England schafften sie es. Ein Connaisseur überließ mir ein Sample zu einem wirklich fairen Preis. Aber dazu noch etwas später mehr. Diese Abfüllung aus Barbados ist laut Angabe in der West India Rum Distillery produziert worden. Hier ist wohl die West Indies Rum Distillery gemeint (aka W.I.R.D.), welche auch besser bekannt ist als Blackrock Distillery. Der Name kommt von ihrem Standort Blackrock in der Stadt Brighton im Parish St. Michael. Diese Destillerie ist auch die Heimat der alten Rockley-Still. Ob diese Still aktuell noch produziert ist mir leider nicht bekannt. Es könnte aber auch ein originaler Blackrock sein, welcher bereits von Samaroli und Pellegrini S.p.A. abgefüllt wurde. Auch Plantation benutzt diesen Rum-Stil aus Blackrock. Er ist aber nur noch schwer als solcher zu erkennen. Muss wohl man den diversen Finishs liegen. Die Barbados Rums von Plantation aus dem Jahrgang 1991 waren noch relativ einfach als „Blackys“ zu erkennen. Ich hoffe einmal nicht, dass dieses Exemplar zur letzten Kategorie gehört und hoffe auf eine Überraschung. Lassen wir uns überraschen. Das Fass mit der Nummer 36 brachte ganze 215 Flaschen hervor. Trotz des hohen Preises glaube ich nicht daran, dass diese Abfüllung ein Ladenhüter wird.

Verkostung TheRumSwedes Barbados WIRD (Rockley) 13 YO:

Preis: Eine Flasche dieses Rums kostet rund 100€ bei MastersofMalt. Sonst war der Rum bisher nur in Schweden erhältlich. Ob es noch weitere Quellen geben wird ist ungewiss. Der Preis wird vermutlich viele Käufer abschrecken. Aber ich habe keine Zweifel, dass die Chaps bei Masters of Malt diese Pullen auch los werden. ;)

Alter: Diese Abfüllung wurde im Juni 2000 destilliert und im Juli 2013 abgefüllt. Das offizielle Alter beläuft sich somit auf 13 Jahre.

Alkoholstärke: Die Trinkstärke beträgt noch ganze 58,8%vol.. Dies könnte noch die volle Fassstärke des Rums beim Abfüllen gewesen sein.

Destillationsverfahren: Das Destillationsverfahren ist wahrscheinlich eine Pot Still. Vielleicht ist das aber auch nur ein Wunschgedanke meinerseits. ;)

Farbe: Der Rum erstrahlt in einem satten Goldton. Das Fass war für 13 Jahre angemessen aktiv. Da hatte ich echt schon weit blassere Rums mit einem höheren Alter im Glas. Die Reife macht mich neugierig.

Viskosität: Der Rum fließt träge hinab zum Glasgrund und bleibt in vielen kleinen Perlen an der Glaswand haften. Die Öligkeit ist für 13 Jahre mehr als angemessen.

Nase: Jackpot! Ich rieche die wunderschöne Honignote des alten Rockley-Stils. Sie wird garniert von einer angenehmen Süße. Die Vanille ist präsent, aber nicht zu dominant. Am ehesten kann man sie etwas weiter weg vom Glas erschnüffeln. Taucht man dagegen die Nase ins Glas wird man mit Honig, Teer und Mandelaromen bombardiert. Zwar sind die Letzteren nicht so krass, wie sie beim Duncan Taylor der Fall waren, aber für 13 Jahre ist dies ein sehr reifer Rockley. Dieser zeigt deutlich seine Verwandtschaft zu seinen Vorgängern aus 1986. Ich rieche auch Holzaromen, welche mit dem Honig und den Mandelaromen zart verwoben ist. Es ist keinerlei Bitterkeit zu erkennen. Der für mich typische Rauch ist nur minimal vorhanden und wurde von der Reife fast vollständig verdrängt. Andere mögen dieses Aroma nicht als Rauch betrachten, für mich ist es aber genau das. Mit Asche oder dem Ausbruch des Vesuvs sollte man diese aber nicht vergleichen oder gar verwechseln. Dafür rieche exotische Früchte, die ich nur schwer einordnen kann. Schwenkt man das Glas kann man diese Frucht in seiner vollen Pracht riechen. Nach einigen Sekunden des Stehens verblassen sie jedoch.Wollen wir diesen Schatz einmal verkosten.

Gaumen: Zuerst flutet eine angenehme Süße den Mundraum. Diese ist aber nicht zu dominant. Der Alkohol verteilt sich im gesamten Mundraum und brennt überraschend nur sehr dezent auf der Zunge. Erstaunlich. Bedenken sie bitte die Trinkstärke von 58,8% vol. Die Honigaromen, verwobenmit Teer,sind die ersten Eindrücke. Begleitet werden diese von einer angenehmen leichten Rauchigkeit und Gewürzen. Danach folgen Holzaromen, welche der Fasslagerung geschuldet sind. Diese sind allerdings keinesfalls bitter. Dieses Aroma schmeckt eher nach einer Art Süßholz. Man könnte den Rum als leicht esterhaltig einstufen. Von Jamaikanern àla Hampden oder Long Pond ist er allerdings weit entfernt. Diese Esternote, gepaart mit minimalen Kräuteraromen, sind mir auch schon bei einigen alten Rums von1986 aufgefallen.

Abgang: Zuerst startet der Abgang mit Gewürzen und Honigaromen, welche mit Mandeln und Holzaromen garniert sind. Nach einigen Sekunden huscht ein sehr leichter Rauchgeschmack über den Gaumen. Nun schmecke ich auch Teer und dunkle Gewürze. Auch der Abgang enthält keine Bitterkeit. Am Ende verbleibt ein Hauch von Teer, Honig und Nelken am Gaumen.

Fazit: Tack killar! Or should I rather say:Well done guys!Das ist der alte Rockley-Stil in Bestform. Er erinnert mich sehr an den Duncan Taylor West Indies Distillery 1986 25 YO, der innerhalb kürzester Zeit vom Markt verschwunden war. Allerdings liegen zwischen beiden Abfüllungen noch deutliche Unterschiede. Der Duncan Taylor hattein der Nase mehr Bourbon-Vanille und besaß dominantereMandelaromen. Auch braucht diese Abfüllung hier etwas Zeit zum Atmen, bis sie ihr volles Potenzial offenbart. Die Farbe des Taylors ist auch ungefähr doppelt so dunkel wie die des TRS, was mich bei 12 Jahren mehr Reife aber auch nicht wirklich erstaunt. Dieses Fass hätte den Rum in einigen weiteren Jahren zu einem wahrlichperfekten Rum werden lassen können, ohne ihn gleich mit bitteren Holzaromen zu überfluten. Ob er mit 25Jahren auch so gut gewesen wäre wie der Duncan Taylor? Wer weiß das schon. Mein Dank in diesem Review geht an Drambustervom Cocktails&DreamsForum. Anfang April kam er zufällig in den Chat und suchteInformationenüber den alten Stil von Rockley. Nach einigen Minuten bot er mir dann die Möglichkeit an, an ein Sample dieser Abfüllung zu einem sehr fairen Preis zu gelangen. Ich möchte mich hier auch noch einmal ganz herzlich für diese Gelegenheit bedanken. :)
Die Qualität ist sehr hoch anzusiedeln und der Rum bekommt von mir, trotz der geringen Verfügbarkeit außerhalb Schwedens und trotz des hohen Kaufpreises, eine Kaufempfehlung. Hier zeigt Barbados eindrucksvoll was es an edlen Rums zu bieten hat. Ich hoffe das es noch weitere Abfüllungen dieses Stils geben wird und wir Connaisseure auch in Zukunft noch in sinnlichen Genüssen von Barbados schwärmen können. Diese sind meilenweit von Rums mit Kokosnussaromen entfernt. Ich persönlich hoffe auch auf eine weitere Abfüllung aus Mount Gay. Der Isla Del Ron Barbados (Mount Gay Distillery) 2000 12 YO hat letztes Jahr eindrucksvoll gezeigt, was diese Destillerie an Qualität zu bieten hat. Rum and Sweden? An interesting mix.

Welcome to Barrel-Aged-Mind! Today, a currently available bottling from Barbados comes the blog. Of course I do not want to hide the fact, that only one source outside of Sweden is listing this rum for sale. And since it is bottled for Sweden it is outrageously expensive. But after all the recent Demeraras it is time for some variety. ;)

The Bottling / bottler:

This one is bottled by the Independent Bottler Svenska Eldvatten ("Swedish fire water") from Sweden. It is operated by Tommy Andersen and Peter Sjögren. I must confess that I have never read that name until this little rum-series last year saw the light of day. The name of this little series is "The Rum Swedes". It includes two rums from Guyana (Diamond Distillery in 2002 & 2003), this rum from Barbados, a bottling from Jamaica (Hampden Distillery, 2000) and two bottlings from Trinidad (Caroni Distillery 1997 & 1999). All are interesting candidates and to not promise to be boring at first glance. However, there is still the handicap of low availability and the high prices. But for our rum friends in Sweden these bottlings must truly represent a small treasures. This one from Barbados was at the very beginning the most interesting one to me, but I could not get a hand on it. Finally, some bottles found their way into German hands and also to an shop in England. A connoisseur gave me a sample for a fair price. But all in good time. This bottling from Barbados has been distilled in the West India Rum Distillery. At least this is written on the label. I think they mean the West Indies Rum Distillery (aka W.I.R.D.), which is also known as Black Rock Distillery. The name comes from its location Blackrock in the city of Brighton in the Parish of St. Michael. This distillery is supposedly also home of the old Rockley Still. If this still is currently being used is not known to me. It could also be an original Blackrock, which was already bottled by Samaroli and Pellegrini SpA. Also Plantation Rum uses this style of Blackrock. But it is difficult to be recognized as such. Maybe the finihses? Who knows. The Barbados rum from the vintage of 1991 was relatively easy to recognize as "Blacky". I do hope that this specimen belongs not to the last category and I do hope to be surprised. The barrel with the number 36 has produced 215 bottles. Despite the high price, I do not believe that this bottling is a shop keeper.

Tasting TheRumSwedes Barbados WIRD (Rockley) 13 YO:

Price: A bottle of this rum will cost around 100€ at MastersofMalt. Otherwise, it was previously only available in Sweden. Whether there will be further sources is uncertain. The price is likely to deter many buyers. But I have no doubt that the chaps at Masters of Malt will get rid off these bottles. ;)

Age: This bottling was distilled in June 2000 and bottled in July 2013. The official age amounts to 13 years.

ABV: The drinking-strength is 58.8%abv. This could be the full cask strength.

Process of distillation: The distillation process is probably a pot still. Perhaps this is also just wishful thinking on my part. ;)

Colour: The rum shines in a rich golden colour. The barrel was appropriate active for 13 years. The maturity makes me curious.

Viscosity: The rum flows lazily down to the glass bottom and many small beads adhere to the glass wall. The oiliness is for 13 years more than adequate.

Nose: Jackpot! I smell the beautiful honey flavours of the old so-called Rockley-style. It is topped by a pleasant sweetness. The vanilla is present but not dominant. You can easily sniff it a little further away from the glass. After getting the nose deeper into the glass you will be bombarded with honey, tar and almond flavours. Although the latter are not as pronounced as they were in the Duncan Taylor, but this is a very mature Rockley for 13 years. It clearly shows it's relationship to its predecessors from 1986. I also smell aromas of wood, which is interwoven with the delicate honey and almond flavours. No bitterness. The typical smoke is only minimally present and is almost completely displaced by the maturity and it's resulting flavours. Others my regard this flavor not as smoke, but for me it is just that. You should not compare it with ash or the eruption of the Vesuvius. There are also exotic fruits but I have trouble to identify them. After panning the glass you can smell the fruitness in it's full glory. However, after a few seconds of standing they are fading out again. Let me taste now this little treasure.

Palate: First a pleasant sweetness is flooding the mouth. However, the sweetness is not too dominant. The alcohol is spreading throughout the mouth and burns surprisingly very discreetly on the tongue. Amazing. Keep in mind please that the drinking strength is 58.8%abv. The honey flavours interwoven with tar, are the first impressions. These are accompanied by a pleasant light smokiness and spices. This is followed by wood flavours from the barrel. However, the rum is by no means bitter. This flavor tastes more like a "sweet wood". One could classify it as a very light estery rum. Regarding Jamaicans à la Hampden or Long Pond, however, it is very far away. These esters notes, coupled with herbal flavours have already struck me in some old rum from 1986.

Finish: First, the finish starts with spices and honey flavours, which are on the other hand garnished with almonds and oak. After a few seconds flits a very light smoke flavour over the palate. Now I taste and tar and dark spices. Also, the finish contains no bitterness. At the end a hint of tar, honey and cloves remains on the palate.

Conclusion: Tack killar! Or should I rather say: Well done guys! This is the old “Rockley style” at its best. It reminds me very much of the Duncan Taylor West Indies Distillery 1986 25 YO, who had disappeared in no time from the market. However, there are still significant differences between the two bottlings. The Duncan Taylor had in the nose more bourbon vanilla and the almond flavors were a bit more dominant. Also, this bottling takes some time to breathe until it reveals its full potential. The colour of the Taylor is also about twice as dark as the TheRumSwedes, which is not really surprising if you recall the difference of 12 years. This barrel would have formed a perfect rum in a few more years, without flooding it with too much bitter oak aromas. Would it have been as good with 25 years as the Duncan Taylor? Who knows. My thanks goes to Drambuster of the Cocktails&Dreams forum. In early April he happened to come into our old chat walked in and looked for information on the old style of Rockley. After a few minutes, he then offered me the possibility of getting a sample of this bottling at a very fair price. I would also like to thank you once again for this opportunity. :) 

The quality is very high and the rum gets, despite the limited availability outside Sweden and despite the high purchase price, a buy recommendation from me. Barbados here impressively demonstrates what it has to offer on fine rums. I hope that there will be even more bottlings of this style and we can still savour it with sensual pleasure in the future. This is a far cry from rum with coconut flavours. Personally, I also hope of further bottlings from Mount Gay. The Isla Del Ron Barbados (Mount Gay) 12 YO released last last year has impressively demonstrated what this distillery can produce.
