The Rum Dealers Selection Long Pond Distillery 2000 14 YO Cask 23

Heute kommt ein "altes Review" und neues Batch von Long Pond auf den Blog. Damals war es schon eine ziemliche Überraschung, als dieser UA in Brühl begann, seine eigenen Rums abzufüllen. Die Label waren und sind aber immer noch ein kleines Manko. Heute stelle ich den The Rum Dealers Selection Long Pond Distillery 2000 14 YO Cask 23 vor.

Zur Abfüllung:

Von diesem kleinen deutschen UA kamen schon einige eigene Rum-Abfüllungen. Dies ist eine Abfüllung, um die ein gewisser Hype im Internet kursierte. Ich gebe allerdings auch zu, dass dieser „Rummel“ mir etwas entgangen ist. Bei mir stand damals der The Rum Dealer Selection Barbados WIRD (Rockley) 13 YO mehr im Fokus. Dennoch kaufte ich eine Flasche dieser Abfüllung. Diese spezielle Abfüllung aus Brühl kannte ich aber vor dem The Rum Cask Jamaica Rum Long Pond Distillery 2000 13 YO mit 58,2% und dies ist auch der Grund, warum ich zuerst diesen Long Pond aus 2000 als Erstes aus diesem Batch vorstelle. Leider, und da sind beide Abfüllungen ziemlich identisch, liefern sie keine Information zur Flaschenanzahl, was aber auch Bristol, WMCadenhead und Berry Bros & Rudd nicht tun. Etwas mehr Seriösität und Informationen würden hier echt den Abfüllungen gut tun, aber den meisten Käufern wird es eh egal sein, solange der Inhalt das Geld auch wert ist, womit sie auch im Grunde recht haben. Ich würde auch nichts kaufen, was mich von der Qualität her nicht überzeugt oder eine mehr als nebulöse und haarsträubende PR vorweist. Aber fürs perfekte Auftreten ist dieses Fehlen nun einmal ein Manko. Die Fassnummer ist in diesem Kontext auch herzlich egal, da alle Fässer höchstwahrscheinlich vom Importeur eh eine neue Nummern bekommen, oder erst dort ins Fass kommen (siehe Guyana). Gerade aber dann macht einem es sprachlos, mit welcher Gedankenlosigkeit einfach ein paar Fässer genommen werden, und so etwas maues wie einige Demeraras aus 2003 und 1998 zustande kommen. Wobei ich bezweifle, dass beim letzteren Batch ein aktiveres Fass etwas gebracht hätte. Beim Ersteren allerdings glaube ich noch daran.

Bisher gab es aus diesem „neuen“ Batch schon einige Rums aus Long Pond. Diese Abfüllung hier, den Isla Del Ron Jamaica Rum (Long Pond) 2000 14 YO mit 55,2%, den The Rum Cask Jamaica Rum Long Pond Distillery 2000 13 YO mit 58,2% und der Duncan Taylor Long Pond Distillery 13 YO (2000 – 2014) Cask 6 mit 54,6%. Es mag noch mehr geben, aber zumindest diese Abfüllungen aus 2000 kann ich zweifelsfrei Long Pond zuordnen. Von diesen vier kenne ich nur ganze drei. Über die Qualität des Duncan Taylor kann ich noch nichts sagen. Erst vor kurzem habe ich ein Sample des DT bekommen. Ich fand allerdings noch nicht die Zeit zum Verkosten.

Verkostung The Rum Dealers Selection Long Pond Distillery 2000 14 YO Cask 23:

Preis: Die Abfüllung gab es damals für 39,90€ die 0,5 Liter Flasche im Onlineshop. Das war 2014. Im Jahr 2015 entschloss man sich nicht mehr alles im Internet anzubieten, da gewisse Abfüllungen viel zu schnell von der Bildfläche verschwunden waren.

Alter: Das offizielle Alter beträgt 14 Jahre. Der Rum wurde im Jahre 2000 auf Jamaika destilliert und im Jahre 2014 abgefüllt.

Alkoholstärke: Der Rum hat noch seine Fassstärke von 63,8%vol. Einen Teil hiervon habe ich auf 45% verdünnt, um den Rum mehr Aromen zu entlocken.

Destillationsverfahren: Das offizielle Verfahren ist eine Pot Still.

Farbe: Der Rum hat einen satten Goldton im Glas. Eine gute Reife für 14 Jahre in Europa.

Viskosität: Der Rum fließt relativ träge in dicke Schlieren wieder hinab zum Glasgrund. Dabei bilden sich dicke Perlen. Der Rum ist für 14 Jahre angemessen ölig.

Nase: Zuerst rieche ich Eichenaromen und dann Gewürze, darunter Nelken. Dazu gesellen sich noch frisches Leder, süßes Toffee. Der Alkohol sticht etwas in der Nase. Bedenken Sie bitte verehrte Leser, das wir hier einen Rum mit über 60% vor uns haben. Er brennt sich also bis tief in die Nase hinein. Die Nase ist leicht süßlich, aber diese Süße wird durch den Alkohol etwas verdrängt. Ich rieche nach kurzer Zeit exotische Früchte in Form von süßen Aprikosen, Äpfel und anderen Früchten.Weiter weg vom Glas kann man einen Hauch von Vanille und Mangos erhaschen. Die Nase ist insgesamt mehr pflanzlich als fruchtig. Ich rieche auch Kamille. Dieser Stil ist definitiv anders als der von 1986 oder gar 1993. da sind noch andere Früchte, die ich allerdings nicht ganz einordnen kann. Mal sehen was Wasser bewirken kann. 

Mit Wasser verliert der Alkohol enorm an Kraft. Die Frucht ist nun deutlich stärker vorhanden. Ich rieche Mangos, Passionsfrüchte und unreife Bananen. Der Rum riecht nun noch pflanzlicher als zuvor unverdünnt. Im Hintergrund lauern nun Anis und Eichenaromen vom Fass. Diese beiden Eindrücke sind aber sehr schwach. Im Vergleich von zuvor, hat sich die Frucht erhöht und die Gewürze haben sich reduziert. Ich rieche nun nur noch ganz schwach die Nelken. Ganz kurz kann man sogar Aprikose und reife Papayas erkennen. Nach dem Schwenken des Glases ist die Frucht am stärksten. Nun rieche ich auch leichte Aromen von Zitrusfrüchte. Das kenne ich von den Jahrgängen 1986 und 1993 überhaupt nicht. Was auch immer im Batch anders gemacht wurde, es schmeckt nicht nach dem „alten Long Pond Stil“.

Gaumen: Der Rum beginnt zuerst leicht süßlich. Dann kommt der Alkohol. Er brennt auf der Zunge und regt den Speichelfluss enorm an. Ich schmecke Mangos, Passionsfrüchte und noch einige mehr, die ich nicht eindeutig zuordnen kann. Ich schmecke einen pflanzlichen Touch in Form von Kamille, dazu auch leichte Gewürzspuren. Frisches Leder und Eichenaromen vom Fass verbinden sich mit den Früchten und versuchen eine Einheit zu bilden. Der Rum schmeckt sehr pflanzlich und mineralisch. Leider schmecke ich keine Nuss oder Toffee, wie ich es von den beiden „alten“ Jahrgängen her gewohnt bin. Ich bin schon ein wenig enttäuscht. 

Mit Wasser schmecke ich nun einen noch stärkeren pflanzlichen Geschmack. Die Kamille wurde stärker. Die Gewürze sind nun klar als Nelken zu erkennen. Das Wasser hat also den Rum etwas weiter geöffnet. Wieder frisches Leder mit schwachen Eichenaromen. Diese Fassaromen werden garniert von exotischen Früchten, in Form von Mangos und Passionsfrüchten. Der Rum ist nun sehr sanft. Allerdings ist die Frucht am Gaumen deutlich geringer geworden, was mich ehrlich etwas verwirrt. Unverdünnt waren sie stärker am Gaumen präsent, aber in der Nase eher unterdrückt. Jetzt durch das Wasser sind sie in der Nase mehr vorhanden, aber am Gaumen haben sie nachgelassen. Die Eichenaromen, das Leder und die Gewürze haben zwar an Kraft, dafür aber an Profil gewonnen. Man kann sie klarerer erkennen. Mehr Wasser würde ich aber niemals hinzufügen.

Abgang: Der Abgang beginnt unverdünnt mit Eiche und frischem Leder. Dann kommt überraschenderweise Toffee und Nussaromen zum Vorschein. Ganz kurz zeigt dieser Rum sein Können aus vergangenen Zeiten (1986 & 1993). Nun huschen auch leichte Esteraromen über den Gaumen. Was bleibt ist ein mineralischer Geschmack am Ende. 

Mit Wasser startet der Abgang wieder mit Eiche und Leder. Dann kommen leichte Nuancen von Ester und das Toffee mit Nussaromen. Leider sind die beiden letzten Eindrücke viel zu kurz. Dann folgen Mangos und Passionsfrüchte. Auch hier verbleibt nur ein Hauch von Mineralien im Mund.

Fazit: Ein ordentlicher Rum, aber leider nichts Spektakuläres aus der Long Pond Distillery. An die Qualität aus alten Zeiten kann der 2000er Jahrgang hier nicht anknüpfen. Die von mir sonst so geschätzten Toffee-Nussaromen aus 1986 und 1993 kann ich hier fast nur im Abgang finden. Was wurde da geändert? Ist dies einfach ein anderer Stil, wie erinnern uns, es gibt ja vier jamaikanische Stile, oder das ist nichts anderes als eine Variation der gekauften Batches? Zwar habe ich nie Bilder der Destillerie je gesehen, aber verfügt diese jamaikanische Destillerie schon über elektronisch gesteuerte Produktionsanlagen, in denen es eigentlich fast nur noch minimale Abweichungen gibt, wie in der modernen Whisky-Industrie? Glauben kann ich dies irgendwie nicht wirklich. Es könnten also tatsächlich nur Variationen der gekauften Batches sein. Es gab also nach 2000 und 2002 noch 2004, 2005 und sogar schon 2010 Rums aus der Long Pond Destillerie, die ihren Weg nach Europa schafften. Bisher kenne ich nur den Jahrgang 2000. Ich habe aber vor mir die anderen Batches auch etwas genauer unter die Lupe zu nehmen. Sie dürften auch bald in größerer Zahl auf dem Markt erscheinen. Zumindest dürfte sich der Ausstoß an Rum-Abfüllungen erhöhen, wenn die Whisky-Industrie weiter ihre Fässer verknappt und die Hürden für UAs weiter erhöht. Die Zukunft für echt-authentischen Rum sieht vielversprechend aus. Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob die jamaikanische Rum-Industrie genug Profit abwirft um am Leben zu bleiben. Was mich auch interessiert ist die Frage, ob es bald ein gesteigertes Selbstbewusstsein der Hersteller gibt. Die Husseys versuchen mit Hampden nun ihre eigenen Marken stark zu machen. Gordon Clarke ist mit Worthy Park auch auf einem guten Weg, die eigenen Hausmarken weiter zu stärken. Bisher bleiben bei beiden Destillerien aber Rums mit Altersangaben aus. Und Monymusk? Monymusk verkauft seit 2011 einen Overproof Rum. Und Long Pond? Eine sehr gute Frage. Ich fand nichts, was einer positive Stimmung verbreiten würde. Allerdings fand ich auch nichts Gegenteiliges. Anmerkung: Es gibt bisher noch kein Batch aus 2004 von Long Pond. Der Rum von The Whisky Warehouse stammt nicht aus 2004 sondern ebenfalls aus 2000 und ist aus exakt demselben Fass, wie diese Abfüllung (#23). Auch der Monat Juni hätte mir eigentlich einen Hinweis geben sollen. Für diese falsche Information möchte ich mich an dieser Stelle entschuldigen.

Today a rather old review and totally new batch from Long Pond (Jamaica) comes to the blog. At that time it was quite a surprise, as this new independent bottler in Brühl joined the market with his own bottled rum. I still think the labels are imperfect. However, today I present to you the first of his released rums. It is The Rum Dealers Selection Long Pond Distillery 2000 14 YO Cask 23.

The Bottling:

There were now quite a few bottlings from this small German IB. This bottling had a certain hype in the greatest rum community in Germany. However, I have somewhat missed this hype. I had other priorities at the time, which was the The Rum Dealer Selection Barbados WIRD (Rockley) 13 YO. The Bajan rum was a bit more important to me than the Jamaican rum, because on the old blog it was also Flo's category and not mine. Still, I bought a bottle of this rum in a 2^nd deal. This special Barbados bottling from Brühl has already been reviewed by me. Now our attention will come to this little bottling made in Jamaica. It was also the first rum of the vintage of 2000 which I had in my possession, which is also the reason why I will introduce him as first rum of this vintage. Unfortunately this bottling has many common with the other bottling's from Mr. Bonn. They do not provide all information's, such as bottle numbers. But also other bottlers are not doing this, just like Bristol Spirits Limited, Berry Bros & Rudd and WMCadenhead in both of its Series (“Green Label” and “Dated Distillation”). A bit more information would make this bottling more serious in my humble opinion. However, most buyers don't give a damn about such little things, as long as the quality is good enough and worth the money. I would also not buy anything if the quality is not good enough, but like I said, a little bit more information would be just fine. The meaning of the barrel number is somewhat less significant than some people might know. All rums from Guyana are being casked in UK or Europe and are shipped in tanks from Guyana to there. The barrel number is from the importer. But this kind of stepmotherly treating makes me angry. Why does no one check the quality of the barrels? A few barrels or even batches are quiet useless because they are immature. I have to admit that the famous 1998 batch of Uitvlugt would be even a hopeless case with higher active barrels. I did believe otherwise for a while, but I think I was wrong here. They are just too pure. 

Until now, this "new" Batch from Long Pond had made it's appearance a few times on the European market. This bottling here, the Isla Del Ron Jamaica Rum (Long Pond) 2000 14 YO 55.2%, then The Rum Cask Jamaica Rum Cask Long Pond Distillery 2000 13 YO with 58.2% and the Duncan Taylor Long Pond Distillery 13 YO ( 2000 - 2014) Cask 6 with 54.6%. There may be even more, but these four bottlings from 2000 are the ones I at least do know of. And I can say with absolute certainty that Long Pond is the origin of all three. The is a Berry Bros % Rudd Jamaica rum from 2000, which I did not yet have as a sample, so I can not say from what distillery this one might be. I can't say anything about the quality of the Duncan Taylor yet. I recently acquired a sample of this one, but I had not yet the time to try it

Tasting TheRumDealers Selection Long Pond Distillery 2000 14 YO Cask 23:

Price: The bottling did cost 39,90 € per 0.5 liter bottle in the online shop of the Brühlerwhiskyhaus. That was in 2014. In 2015 it was decided to no longer offer anything on the Internet, as some bottlings have disappeared too quickly from the scene and from the shelves of the shop. Much to the disappointment of his regular costumers, which don't buy on the internet.

Age: The official age is 14 years. The rum was distilled in Jamaica in 2000 and bottled in 2014.

ABV: The rum has still the full cask strength of 63.8%abv. I diluted a part hereof to 45%abv in order to elicit the more flavours.

Process of distillation: The official process is a pot still.

Colour: The rum has a rich golden colour. A good maturity for 14 years in Europe.

Viscosity: The rum is flowing relatively sluggish in thick streaks back down to the glass bottom. There are also thick beads. The rum is appropriate oily for 14 years.

Nose: First I smell oak aromas and spices, including cloves. This is joined by fresh leather and sweet toffee. The alcohol burns a little harsh in the nose. Please keep in mind, dear reader, that we have here a rum with more than 60%abv. It is burning its way deep into the nose. The rum is slightly sweet but this sweetness is being displaced by the alcohol. I smell an exotic fruitness in the form of sweet apricots, apples and other unknown fruits after a short time. Further away from the glass I smell a hint of vanilla and mango. The nose is more herbal than fruity. I smell also chamomile. This style is definitely different in comparison to 1986 or even different than 1993. There are other fruits that I however can not quite identify. Maybe a little bit water will help. 

With water the alcohol loses enormously in power. The fruit is now clearly stronger. I smell mangoes, passion fruit and unripe bananas. The rum smells now more herbal than before. In the background are now lurking anise and oak flavors from the barrel. These two impressions are very weak. Compared with the previously imrpession the fruit has increased, and the spices have been reduced. I smell now faintly cloves. Very briefly you can even recognize apricot and ripe papayas. The fruit is strongest after a panning of the rum inside the glass. Now I even recognize slight aromas of citrus fruits. This rum from 2000 is totally different than 1986 and 1993. Whatever the reason might be but this vintage of 2000 does not taste like the old Long Ponds.

Palate: The rum starts first slightly sweet. Then the alcohol is rushing in. It burns in the mouth and stimulates the production of saliva enormously. I taste mango, passion fruit and a few more. There is also a herbal touch in the form of chamomile, and more mild spices. Fresh leather and oak flavors from the barrel combined with the fruits are dominating the nose. The Rum tastes herbal and mineral. Unfortunately, I taste no nut or toffee, as I am used of the two "old" vintages. I'm a little disappointed.

With water I now tast an even stronger herbal taste. The Chamomile is stronger. The spices are now clearly recognized as carnations. The water has open up the rum. Again fresh leather with weak oak aromas. This cask aromas are garnished with exotic fruits in the form of mango and passion fruit. The rum is now very gentle. However, the fruit has become significantly weaker on the palate, what confuses me a little bit. Undiluted they were stronger present on the palate, but rather suppressed in the nose. Now through the water they are in the nose stronger, but on the palate they have been weakened. I would not add more water.

Finish: The finish starts undiluted with oak and fresh leather. Then, surprisingly, comes toffee and nut flavours to the fore. Very briefly this rum shows his face from bygone times (1986 & 1993). Now even slight ester aroma scurry across the palate. What remains is a mineral taste at the end. 

With water the finish starts again with oak and leather. Then come a little nuances of esters and toffee with nutty flavours. Unfortunately, the last two impressions are far too short. Then follow mango and passion fruit. Again, only a hint of minerals is left in the mouth

Conclusion: A neat rum, but unfortunately nothing spectacular from the Long Pond Distillery. It can not match up with the old quality. Maybe 2000 is just not the ordinary Long Pond or visa versa. The expected toffee and nut flavours of Long Pond are only noticeable in the finish. In the rums of 1986 and 1993 they were more present and not only taste-able in the finish. What has been changed? Is this simply a different style, as I would like to remember, there are four Jamaican styles or is this nothing more than a variation of different batches? I have not seen any pictures of the distillery itself. Is it still the old fashioned one with manual control or is it already automated like the ones in the whisky industry? A old fashioned approach would allow a much more variety of rums even within the same style. Maybe this is one? I am unsure. It just can be a a different variation of a batch. New Long Pond vintages are 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2010. At least those were bought in bulk and have already being bottled. So far, I only do know the vintage of 2000. But I have to take a close look at these new batches. I am interested in how strong or how weak they might be. At least the emissions of rum bottlings has been increased in the past years during the “whisky-shortcomings”. Those new vintages might appear very quickly on the market. The future for honest and real authentic rum looks promising. It remains to be seen whether the Jamaican rum industry yields enough profit to stay alive to see it happen. What also interests me is the question of whether there is an increased self-confidence of the producers. The Hussey's now trying to make their own Hampden brands more popular. Gordon Clarke with Worthy Park is also strengthening the own brands. But rums with an age statement on the label from both distilleries? Nix. Nil. Nada. Zip. And Monymusk? Monymusk has released an Over Proof Rum in 2011. And Long Pond? A very good question. I found nothing that would spread a positive atmosphere. However, I also found nothing contrary. We'll see.

Note: There was no batch-release of 2004 from Long Pond distillery, yet. The bottling of the The Whisky Warehouse is not from 2004 but also from 2000 and is coming from the exactly same barrel as this bottling (cask # 23). Even the month June should have given me an indication. I want to apologize for this false information.
