TWA Guyana (Uitvlugt) Rum 1998 14 YO

Willkommen auf BAM!

Heute ist mal wieder ein Rum aus Guyana, besser gesagt aus der Region Demerara, an der Reihe verkostet zu werden. Diese Abfüllung wurde 2012 abgefüllt und noch im gleichen Jahr auf den europäischen Markt gebracht und ist noch bei einigen Händlern zu finden.

Zur Abfüllung:

Die Abfüllung stammt von den beiden Abfüllern The Whisky Agency und The Nectar. Erster kommt aus Deutschland und der Letztere aus Belgien. The Nectar hatte schon in der Vergangenheit einige Rums der Plantation Reihe veröffentlicht. Dazu zählte auch ein Rum aus Jamaika mit dem Jahrgang 1983. The Whisky Agency ist noch nicht allzu lange im Rum-Segment vertreten. Diese Abfüllung hier muss dem deutschen Abfüller wohl gefallen haben, denn es gab eine weitere Veröffentlichung. Den Guyana (Uitvlugt) 1998 15 YO mit 51,7%vol.. Dieser hatte also dieselbe Trinkstärke, was aber nichts zu bedeuten hat (Stichwort Verdünnung), und das Fass brachte dort insgesamt 269 Flaschen hervor. Von dieser Abfüllung hier gab es 253 Flaschen weltweit. Der Jahrgang 1998 hatte schon einige Rums hervorgebracht. Da wäre unter anderem der Mezan Guyana Uitvlugt 1998 13 YO mit 40%, der allerdings in Barrique Fässern gereift sein könnte. Zumindest steht etwas mit Barrique Aged auf dem Label. Andere Rums aus diesem Jahrgang sind der TheRumCask Uitvlugt Rum 1998 15 YO mit 63,2% und der Scotland and Malts Guyana Limited Rum 1998 (Uitvlugt) 14 YO mit 63,2%. Alle Rums stammen wohl aus demselben Batch und dürften in der Grundkonsistenz recht ähnlich sein. Die Trinkstärke von 51,6%vol. lässt mich vermuten, dass dieser Rum hier verdünnt wurde. Ein Vergleich mit den beiden anderen Rums mit 63,2% erhärtet diesen Verdacht auch. Das wäre aber allerdings nichts neues. Auch Duncan Taylor hat die Rums ihrer Rum-Serie vermutlich verdünnt. Das muss also noch lange nichts schlechtes bedeuten. Eine Verdünnung kann einem Rum durchaus gut tun.

Was mich allerdings mehr als beunruhigt ist die blasse Farbe des Rums. Bisher waren alle Rums dieses Batches geradezu bleich, wenn man sie mit anderen Rums ähnlichem Alters vergleicht. Sogar einige jüngere Varianten, z.B. der TheRumCask Worthy Park 4 YO, hatten einen satteren Farbton im Glas als diese Rums aus Uitvlugt von 1998. Mittlerweile haben sogar Berry, Bros und Rudd, Duncan Taylor und Isla Del Ron jeweils ein Fass dieses Batches abgefüllt. Bei allen ist die Farbe relativ ähnlich blass. Hier muss also wohl eine ganze Menge an inaktiven, bzw. „toten“ Fässern verwendet worden sein. Wie sich dies im Glas niederschlägt werden wir hier nun „sehen“.

Verkostung The Whisky Agency Guyana (Uitvlugt) Rum 1998 14 YO:

Preis: Der reguläre Preis dieser Abfüllung war und ist noch um die 69.00€. Mein Sample bekam ich aus Belgien, von einem kleinen Subshop von the Bondingdram.eu.

Alter: Das offizielle Alter beträgt 14 Jahre. Der Rum reifte von 1998 bis 2012 in einem ehemaligen Bourbon Fass. Dieses war, wie oben schon erwähnt, wohl schon ziemlich ausgelutscht und hatte den Rum nicht viel reifen lassen. Ich habe hier wirklich eine böse Vorahnung, hoffe jedoch auch mich gründlich zu täuschen.

Alkoholstärke: Die Trinkstärke dieser Abfüllung beträgt 51,7%vol.. Wie bereits erwähnt, vermute ich hier eine Verdünnung. Die ursprüngliche Trinkstärke dürfte so um 64%vol. herum gewesen sein, wie man es bei anderen Rums dieses Batches sehen kann.

Destillationsverfahren: Hierzu gibt es keine offizielle Angabe. Es gibt aber zwei Möglichkeiten. Die Erste wäre ein Rum aus der French Savalle Still, die angeblich leichte Destillate hervorbringt. Die Zweite wäre ein Rum aus der Port Mourant Still. Allerdings steht eindeutig Uitvlugt auf dem Label. Ich tendiere hier also eher zu Möglichkeit Nummer eins.

Farbe: Der Rum erstrahlt in einem sehr hellen Goldton. Er ist etwas blass. Für 14 Jahre zu blass. Hier oxidierte der Rum ohne wirklich viel vom Fass abbekommen zu haben.

Viskosität: Vom Rand an der Krone fließen sehr viele kleine Schlieren relativ schnell hinab zum Glasboden. Die Öligkeit ist nicht sehr hoch. In meinen Augen für 14 Jahre zu wenig.

Nase: Die Nase ist etwas verhalten. Das habe ich bereits befürchtet. Selbst nach einer sehr langen Zeit (30 Minuten) ist die Fülle an Aromen immer noch begrenzt. Der deutlichste Geruch ist die dezente Vanille vom Fass. Dazu gesellen sich einige Fruchtaromen, die jedoch nicht sehr dominant in der Nase sind. Ich erkenne schwach Bananen und Mangos. Ebenfalls eher im Hintergrund versteckt erkenne ich auch noch Gewürze und ganz schwache Anisaromen. Es ist sehr schwer etwas ganz genau aus dieser verhaltenen Nase herauszupicken. Der Rum ist nicht so intensiv, wie ich es sonst von Uitvlugt gewohnt bin. Hier war der Uitvlugt 1988 Full Proof Old Demerara 17 YO ein sehr schönes Beispiel eines sehr reifen Rums aus dieser Still. Besagte Abfüllung wurde hier noch nicht vorgestellt.

Gaumen: Eine nicht zu aufdringliche Süße breitet sich im Mundraum aus. Danach schmecke ich Vanillearomen und ganz minimal feine Aprikose. Der Rum hat eine sehr cremige Struktur. Der Alkohol brennt zuerst etwas, lässt dann aber schnell nach. Der Rum kommt sehr glatt daher. Er ist sehr leicht und unbeschwert zu genießen. Mit Rums aus der Port Mourant Double Wooden Vat Still kann nicht mithalten, dafür ist er aber auch einfacher zu trinken. Das Fehlen von Fassaromen, welches sich schon deutlich in der Nase bemerkbar gemacht hat, bestätigt sich auch hier am Gaumen. Außer einigen Vanillearomen hatte das Fass ihm nichts mitgegeben. Es hat ihn nicht wesentlich bereichert.

Abgang: Feine Vanille, vermischt mit Gewürzen und einem Hauch von Früchten bilden den Anfang des Abgangs. Nach einigen Sekunden kommen die Gewürze etwas mehr zum Vorschein. Der Abgang ist leider nicht sehr lang, dafür wieder sehr glatt und leicht.

Fazit: Wie lautet nun mein Fazit? Dieser Rum ist nichts für Fortgeschrittene oder „altgediente Hasen“. Der Rum hat aber auch seine Vorteile. Er ist ideal für Anfänger geeignet, welche sich dem Thema Rum nähern wollen. Er ist leicht und glatt am Gaumen. Allerdings ist er für all jene, welche schon Erfahrungen mit Fassstärke und / oder den Ländern Jamaika, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Fiji oder anderen Demeraras von diversen UAs gemacht haben, sehr unterfordernd. Dies sage ich nun nicht mit anmaßender Arroganz, sondern mit einer ernüchternder und bleiernen Enttäuschung. Ich hatte wirklich mehr erwartet. Vielleicht wurde ich hier von Velier zu sehr verwöhnt. Aber selbst wenn dies stimmt, dann bin ich von allen alten Jahrgängen von Bristol, Cadenhead, etc. verwöhnt. Warum? Fast alle alten Rums hatten eine sehr schöne Reife und diese schlägt sich deutlich im Genuss nieder. Selbst neuere Rums, wie z.B. aus Jamaika, Barbados, St. Lucia und Fiji (nur um einige zu nennen) hatten aktivere Fässer und schmecken auch einfach besser. Und dies hat mit der verwendeten Still nichtszu tun. Ein solches unreifes Exemplar hatte ich auch schon aus der Versailles Still und sonst sind diese Rums, gut gereift, absolute Burner in meinen Augen. Das Uitvlugt mit seiner French Savalle ganz gut sein kann, hatte Velier gezeigt. Rums wie diese Abfüllung aus 1998 beweisen mir, dass das beste Destillat absolut nichts bringt, wenn man es in inaktive oder tote Fässer steckt. Genauso gut könnte man den Rum in Glas- oder Stahltanks reifen lassen. Sicherlich, die haben null Fassreife. Aber dieser Rum hier hat niemals volle 14 Jahre Fassreife auf dem Buckel. Zugegeben: Der Rum ist nicht scharf, was typisch für junge und ungereifte Rums ist. Aber von der Qualität tropisch gelagerter Rums oder aktiveren Fässern, welche ihren Rums mehr Reife und Fassaromen bescheren, ist diese Version weit entfernt. 

Nun die alles entscheidende Preisfrage: Ist der Rum nun sein Geld wert? Wenn sie auf sehr leichte Rums mit einem unkompliziertem Charakter stehen, dann könnte ihnen der Rum vielleichtdas Geld wert sein. Ich konnte ihm nichts abgewinnen. Ich denke dieses eine Sample reicht für mein restliches Leben und deshalb gebe ich hier keine Kaufempfehlung ab. Ich bin sogar froh, hiervon keine ganze Flasche gekauft zu haben. Aber wie immer müssen sie das als mündige Bürger und Käufer selbst entscheiden, in was sie ihre sauer verdienten Mäuse stecken wollen. Nichtsdestotrotz wünsche ich Euch noch einen schönen Sonntag!

Once again Hello and welcome to BAM!

Todays bottling is once again a rum from Guyana, more precisely from the region Demerara. This rum was bottled in 2012 and was available on the European market in the same year and can still be found at some retailers.

The Bottling:

The bottling comes from the two independent bottlers The Whisky Agency and The Nectar. First comes from Germany and the latter one is from Belgium. The Nectar had published in the past a few rums. This included a rum from Jamaica with the vintage of 1983. The Whisky Agency is not yet represented very long in the rum segment. This bottling must had some lovers because the German bottler made a further release of this batch. The Guyana (Uitvlugt) 1998 15 YO 51.7% vol.. This therefore had the same drinking strength, but that does not mean anything (keyword dilution), and the last barrel produced 269 bottles. From this bottling here, there were 253 bottles worldwide. The batch of 1998 had already brought forth some bottlings. There was the Mezan Guyana Uitvlugt 1998 13 YO with 40% was was alleged aged in Barrique casks. At least it is mentioned on the label. Other rums from this vintage are the TheRumCask Uitvlugt Rum 1998 15 YO with 63.2% and Scotland and Malts Rum Guyana Limited 1998 (Uitvlugt) 14 YO with 63.2%. All rums probably came from the same batch and are likely to be quite similar in the basic consistency. The drinking strength of 51.6% vol. suggests to me that this rum was diluted down with water. A comparison with the other two rums with 63.2% confirmed this suspicion too. But that would be nothing new, however. Duncan Taylor also has probably diluted down the rum rum their series too. That must not mean anything bad. A dilution can do well change a rum, in a positive way of course. 

However, what worries me is more the pale color of this rum. So far, all this rum batches were downright pale when compared with other rums of an similar age. Even some younger versions, such as the TheRumCask Worthy Park 4 YO, had a deeper hue in the glass as these rums from Uitvlugt of 1998. Meanwhile, even Berry Bros and Rudd, Duncan Taylor and Isla Del Ron each filled a barrel of this batch. With all the color is relatively similar pale.A lot of inactive or dead barrels must have been used. We shall see how this will be reflected in the nose and on the palate.

Tasting The Whisky Agency Guyana Uitvlugt Rum 1998 14 YO:

Price: The regular price of this bottling was and is still € 69.00. I got my sample from Belgium, a small Subshop of the Bondingdram.eu.

Age: The official age is 14 years. The rum matured from 1998 to 2012 in a former Bourbon barrel. This was, as mentioned above, probably quite a bit dead and did not let mature the rum much. I have already a bad feeling, but I also do hope that I might be wrong this time.

ABV: The strength of this bottling is 51.7% abv. As mentioned above, I suspect here a dilution. The original drinking strength is expected to be about 64%abv. as one may have seen it in other rums bottled from this batch.

Process of distillation: There is no official statement on the label. However, there are two possibilities. The first would be a rum from the French Savalle Still, wich is said to bring forth light distillates. The second would be a rum from the Port Mourant Still. However, there is clearly Uitvlugt mentioned on the label. I tend rather to option number one.

Colour: The Rum shines in a very very pale golden color. For 14 years to pale. The rum oxidated but got nothing in return from the barrel it seems.

Viscosity: From the edge of the crown are flowing down very many small streaks relatively quickly down to the bottom. The oiliness is not very high. For 14 years too little, I dare say.

Nose: The nose is somewhat restrained. I already have feared this. Even after a very long time (30 minutes), the abundance of flavors is still limited. The most obvious scent is subtle vanilla from the barrel. They are joined by some fruit flavors, but they are not very dominant in the nose. I recognize weak bananas and mangoes. Also hidden in the background rather I recognize even very weak spices and aniseed aromas. It's very hard to pick out something exactly from this subdued nose. The rum is not as intense as I knows it from other rums from Uitvlugt. The full proof Uitvlugt 1988 Old Demerara 17 YO was a very nice example of a very mature rums from this still. Said can not be said for this bottling.

Palate: A non-intrusive sweetness spreads in the mouth. Then I taste much vanilla flavours and quite minimal fine apricot. The rum has a very creamy texture. The alcohol burns first a little on the tongue, but it is loosing this power after a little while. The rum is very smooth. It is very light and easy to sip. But it can noot keep up with rums from the the Port Mourant Double Wooden Vat Still. But it is also easier to drink. The lack of barrel aromas, which was already clearly noticeable in the nose, is also confirmed here on the palate. Except some vanilla flavours the barrel had given him nothing. It has not significantly enriched him.

Finish: Fine vanilla, mixed with spices and hints of fruits form the beginning. After a few seconds the spices are getting a little more intense. The finish is not very long, but again very smooth and light.

Conclusion: Well then, what is my conclusion? This rum is not for the advanced or "veterans" among us. But the rum has its advantages. It is ideal for beginners who want to approach the topic of rum itself. And it is light and smooth on the palate. However, it is for all those who have already experienced with rums in cask strength and / or the countries of Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Fiji and other Demeraras of various UAs, very boring. This I say therefore not overbearing with arrogance but with a sobering and leaden disappointment. I had expected more. Maybe I was spoiled by Velier too much. But even if this is true, then I'm spoiled by all the old vintages of Bristol, Cadenhead, etc. as well Why? Almost all old rum had a very good maturity and this is clearly reflected in the enjoyment. Even newer rums, such as from Jamaica, Barbados, St. Lucia and Fiji (just to name a few) were in more active barrels and did also taste better. And this has nothing to do with still being used. I had such an immature specimen even from the Versailles Still and otherwise well matured rums from Versailles, which are all absolute Burner in my opinion. The Uitvlugt with his French Savalle can be quite good, Velier had shown it. This bottle from 1998 prove to me that the best distillate is absolutely useless if you put it in inactive or dead barrels. You might as well let the rum mature in glass or steel tanks. Surely they have zero barrel maturation. But this rum here has never a minimum of 14 years barrel maturity. Admittedly, the rum is not sharp, which is typical for young and unripened rum. But the quality of this bottling is far away from rum barrels which are more active and can therefore enrich their content in a much better way.

Now the all-important price question: Is the rum worth the money? If you like a very light rum with an uncomplicated character, then you might be able to consider this rum to be worth the money. However, I am not one of those guys. I think this little a sample is enough for me for the rest of my life and so I give here not a buy recommendation. I'm actually glad that I do not own a whole bottle of this rum. But as always, you have to decide it for yourself as a buyer in what you want to put your hard-earned money.
